The Prime Minister's Statement on the Anniversary of the September 11 Terrorist Attack

With their malicious attacks in September 2001 extremists not only declared war on the United States but on all freedom-loving peoples around the world. Therefore, today is not merely a day of commemoration for the thousands of innocent victims; September 11 has become a day when we reconfirm our commitment to freedom.

Regardless of their creed or religious conviction, today all peace-loving people come to realise that there can be no reason for justifying irrational violence, terror and the extinction of innocent lives.

September 11 serves as a reminder and warning to us all. It reminds us about the dangers threatening our safety and turns our attention to the vulnerability of an open society. The pain caused by these tragic events has firmed us in our commitment to basic human rights and the need for peaceful dialogue among cultures.

This is the only way to ensure that the enemies of liberty can never again intimidate the advocates of freedom.
